Meet Founding Attorney, Brian J. Prain
Trusted Advocate and Michigan Criminal Defense Lawyer
A Michigan native, Brian Joseph Prain takes pride in serving the residents of the Greater Detroit area for any and all of their criminal defense needs, including the most serious and infamous criminal charges according to Michigan law: Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC), Child Abuse, and other serious crimes. A versatile trial lawyer with experience on both sides of the docket, Brian has delivered his clients countless Not Guilty verdict settlements thanks to his impressive legal skill and personal tenacity to succeed. Above all else, Brian believes in honoring his commitment to achieving the results his clients desperately need. He is able to comprehensively defend his clients by engaging the hard work and solid ethics Brian developed in his early life experiences. On his life experiences and how they positively shaped him as a defender of your rights and freedom, Brian says:
"I'm not your typical lawyer whose parents were lawyers, bankers or doctors. My parents didn't go to college, but they had strong values. We were a blue-collar family, and my parents taught me the value of hard work. Our father worked very long hours only to give away the shirt off his back. Our mother taught us the importance of various disciplines, those of which are the glue to hold our daily lives together: planning, organization, making lists, neatness, cleanliness, promptness, and consistency. Due to my upbringing, it’s no surprise I became a defender, as I've never forgotten the awful feeling of powerlessness and injustice when a bully attempts to unfairly overpower you. I do not allow my clients to be taken advantage of by a large force of power. I will fight harder for you. If that means staying up all night, practicing my argument incessantly, turning over every stone, and perfecting every detail, then this is how I will approach your case. Losing is NOT acceptable."
After completing his undergraduate degree at Michigan State University, Brian obtained his J.D. from the Michigan State University College of Law, earning admittance on a scholarship. During law school, he began applying himself practically in the courtroom, working with the Washtenaw County Office of the Public Defender and the Law Offices of Shelton & Associates, PLLC. After graduating Law School, Brian wasted no time chasing his true passion of becoming one of America's greatest trial lawyers--founding Prain Law, PLLC. Brian says:
"Law school was certainly necessary, but it didn’t teach me everything. I learned to try cases and practice law in the courtroom. I used to sit in court, watch hearings, and write the entire dialogue out to study it later. I devoured every book, video, training program, and court transcript from my lawyer heroes like Gerry Spence, Roy Black, F. Lee Bailey, Johnny Cochran, and Clarence Darrow. Trial law is an art--it can be perfected only through hard labor, which is why I've never stopped studying and perfecting my craft. When I'm home at night, if I'm not working, I'm buried in a transcript or watching online video of the best lawyers in the world to acquire new ideas and skills. It's my true passion. My life is my work and vice versa."
Today, Brian devotes his practice entirely to trying criminal cases before juries. In 2013, Brian was 1 of only 55 lawyers selected nationwide to attend Gerry Spence's Trial Lawyers College in Wyoming. In addition to being selected by the trusted Super Lawyers® organization on an annual basis since 2013, Brian was also selected as one of Michigan's Top 40 Trial Lawyers Under 40 and one of Michigan's Top 100 Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers by The National Trial Lawyers. Brian was also nationally ranked as a Top 10 Attorney by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys. Brian has also earned the AVVO Client Choice Award, rated at 10.0. Additionally, Prain Law, PLLC was named one of the Top 10 Law Firms for Client Satisfaction by the American Institute of Criminal Law Attorneys. Not only was Brian awarded as one of the Nation's Top One Percent of attorneys by the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, he is also ranked as one of the 21 Best Criminal Defense Lawyers in Detroit by Experise.com.
In his spare time, Brian enjoys working on artwork, mechanics, engines, and classic cars, studying history, and most of all, vigorous physical exercise and practicing a healthy lifestyle. As Brian puts it:
"One of my favorite authors, Jim Rohn, said: 'What you look like isn't up to you, but what you choose to present on the outside should always be a major reflection of what's going on inside.' I believe all disciplines affect each other. Before a lawyer holds other people's lives and futures in their hands, they need to have their own health, life, and future under control. The way I live is a major part of my commitment to my clients."
